Trantorque Frequently Asked Questions & Answers The following addresses general questions concerning Trantorque Keyless Bushings. If you do not find what you are looking for or if you would like assistance with your specific application questions, you may contact us. Q. What is the shaft and bore tolerance? A. The shaft diameter and mounted component bore must be within:
Q. What affect does surface finish have on performance? A. Trantorque is a frictional locking device and performs best when the shaft and mounted component surface finish is between 32 - 125 Ra (roughness average). Lab tests have shown that a 63 Ra is optimum. Q. How much does the Trantorque runout? A. Trantorque GT provides extremely accurate concentricity and superior balance. All Trantorque GT units are concentric within 0.001" T.I.R. (0.025mm). Q. Can I mount Trantorque in a plastic gear, pulley, etc.? A. We do not recommend for use in any component solely constructed of a synthetic material. Most of these types of materials have a certain amount of "creep" under load which will cause loosening over time. A Trantorque unit can be used if the bore of the synthetic component incorporates a reinforcing metal sleeve. Q. Can I mount Trantorque in a bearing? A. We do not recommend using them in bearings. Q. Does Trantorque move when I tighten it? A. Like other tapered mounting devices Trantorque does move axially when tightened. For complete information regarding axial movement, please see our Product Specifications. Q. Does temperature affect performance? A. When the shaft and mating hub are made from steel, Trantorque is not affected by temperature within wide limits of -30° F to +400° F (-34° C to +204° C). Q. Can I mount Trantorque over an empty keyway or a shaft that has a milled flat? A. It will mount successfully over any empty keyway or milled flat without detriment to the performance of the unit. Q. Can I mount Trantorque in a counter-bore or must it be a through bore? A. Trantorque can successfully be mounted in a counter-bore, however the counter-bore must be deep enough to accommodate the axial movement of the unit. For complete information regarding axial movement, please see our Product Specifications. Q. Can I mount two Trantorque units in a common part? A. Two Trantorque units are often used in hollow shafting or a tube to make up a roll as well as being mounted in other wide components. See using 2 Trantorque units. Q. Can I use Trantorque as a rigid coupling? A. Yes. Q. Will Trantorque work as a torque limiting device? A. Trantorque is a keyless locking device designed to securely mount components to shafts. It is not intended to be used as a torque limiting device. Q. Will Trantorque work on a splined shaft? A. Contact us with complete application details. Q. Will Trantorque work in applications involving shock loading? A. The equal but opposing tapers of Trantorque creates a mechanical shrink fit that resists shock and provides exceptional holding power. Q. Can I use pipe wrench to install? A. No. Compressive tools such as a pipewrench, channel lock pliers, vice grips, etc., impose collapsing forces on the nut which could cause damage to the inner collet making the unit inoperable. For further information regarding installing Trantorque, please see the Installation Instructions. |
